Word of the Day: Blog or Weblog

WEBLOG:
A website that displays in chronological order the postings by one or more individuals and usually has links to comments on specific postings. (this definition comes from Dictionary.com)

Several takes on what a weblog, otherwise called a blog, include this one from Harvard Law dating back to 2003:  A weblog is a hierarchy of text, images, media objects and data, arranged chronologically, that can be viewed in an HTML browser.

From Weblogs.com comes this definition:  Weblogs are often-updated sites that point to articles elsewhere on the web, often with comments, and to on-site articles. A weblog is kind of a continual tour, with a human guide who you get to know. There are many guides to choose from, each develops an audience, and there’s also comraderie and politics between the people who run weblogs, they point to each other, in all kinds of structures, graphs, loops, etc.

From the Marketing Terms website:  A frequent, chronological publication of personal thoughts and Web links.

Should you have one?  Absolutely.  There is no doubt in my mind that if you are in business, and you have a website for your business, you need to have a blog.  It needs to be written in your voice, even if you send it to a copy editor (someone in your employment who is better with words than you are) to be polished and entered.  A blog will make you an expert in your business or industry and you will find your veracity rising as you log more and more entries.  Blogs are a powerful marketing tool if used properly as well.   A blog will increase your visibility in the marketplace so you can attract new leads and new customers while keeping your existing customers coming back for more.   A blog is a bridge from your social media marketing to your business website.  If you need help getting your blog set up, or maintaining your blog, please contact Expected Outcomes for assistance.
